Hi! I am Dr. Emily Salazar.
I have been serving the hearing needs of North Texans for more than 20 years. After earning my bachelor's degree in communication disorders from Abilene Christian University, I moved to the area to pursue my master's degree at the University of North Texas. Then, I worked for several years in the area with an ENT group and at the University of North Texas before earning my doctorate from A.T. Still University. Since then, I have practiced at another ENT group. I love the North Texas area and am excited to continue serving the wonderful people here!
The idea for this practice originated from an opportunity to serve a special friend in his home. This friend was medically fragile and could not easily leave his home so I traveled to him to help him hear better after a sudden hearing loss left him almost deafened.
During that time serving him in his home, I was impacted by seeing different needs than I might typically see in a clinical office setting. I realized he needed some different equipment for alerting him to sounds like the smoke alarm and doorbell, and I saw firsthand the devastating significance of losing most of the ability to communicate with his beloved wife. The need to communicate with others using the telephone was also really hindered for him so we had to be creative and use new phone apps to help.
During my experience as an audiologist for more than 20 years, I have always strived to treat others as I would want to be treated and to see hearing issues from my patients’ perspectives. This opportunity reminded me to focus on those goals even more as I practice my profession daily and to be more holistic in treating my patients.
This helped lead me to this practice where I can serve others with hearing needs in their own homes and assisted living, senior living, or nursing homes or their workplaces.
When I'm not helping patients hear better, I love to spend time with my husband and daughter, other family and friends, and my church. I love to travel, hike in beautiful places, practice kickboxing, read, and bake.
How do we perform reliable hearing evaluations outside of a sound booth?
Our audiometer is specially designed and calibrated for testing hearing outside of a sound-isolating booth. We run a scan of the ambient sounds in the room prior to testing that ensures levels do not exceed OSHA standards. Also, our over-the-ear headphones reduce the chance of ambient sounds interfering with results.
We have compared results for some of our patients using our mobile audiometer to their results from tests done traditionally in sound booths to verify reliability.
You can feel confident in your results with our state-of-the-art audiometer and our audiologist with more than 20 years of experience!
